Dear Grade 8 Students and their parents / guardians,
I hope you are enjoying your summer and are looking forward to start up! I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some information about school start up. Our main communication platform is the school website. Please find it at gss.sd42.ca and make this your first point of contact with the school. The GAZETTE can be viewed on the main page and is updated daily. Here you will find all the latest school news and information. Additionally, on our website, you will find links for our Facebook, Twitter & Instagram pages.
All teacher email addresses and additional school contact information is posted. We take pride in updating the website frequently.
This year, Garibaldi is continuing with two new programs specifically for grade 8 students. We are pleased to announce that Garibaldi has progressed in the candidacy phase of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP is an internationally recognized program for ALL students entering grade 8 in September 2018. The Middle Years Programme is an INCLUSIVE, WHOLE SCHOOL programme that is offered to more than 1 million students in over 3,700 schools in 147 countries. The Middle Years Programme focuses on developing critical, creative, and reflective thinkers within a global perspective. It encourages students to make connections between their studies and the real world. The new provincial curriculum for grades 8 and 9, which are being fully implemented this year, aligns with the IB Middle Years Programme. The new curriculum places emphasis on student inquiry, big ideas, competencies, and global awareness, all part of the IB Middle Years Programme.
The second program is Link Crew, which is designed to provide grade 8 students with a strong foundation and a positive peer mentor as they begin high school. Link Crew is a high school transition program that aims to make grade 8 students feel comfortable and connected during their first year of high school. The program is built on the belief that students can help students succeed. Link Crew follows a proven method of training senior students to be Link Crew mentors throughout the year. More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience during their first year in high school, their chance of success dramatically increases.
Information is sent directly to families via the Parent Portal such as newsletters, emergency information, opportunities, etc. This program is how parents give consent for their student: to attend field trips, extra-curricular activities, WiFi use, consent to print student photo in yearbook, as well as absence reporting, to pay fees, etc. Every student must be linked individually to a parent email account. If parents / guardians still need to link a student, they may contact Mrs. Hyslop at firstname.lastname@example.org and request a “Linking Key”, ensuring they include their student’s name.
On the first day of school, grade 8 students will attend a special orientation led by our student Link Crew Leaders & Link Crew teachers, Ms. Lemieux & Mrs. Gibbs

GSS will continue with our collaboration blocks again this year. During collaboration blocks, our students are welcome to be in the school working on projects, assignments, etc. On days with an am collaboration block, formal classes will not start until 9:40 am and on dates with pm collaboration time, formal classes will conclude at 1:30 pm, though students may remain in areas of study until 2:40 pm.
REPORTING A STUDENT ABSENCE:
Parents may report absences via the parent portal, which will notify teachers directly. This is preferred to a traditional phone call.
Portal reports are collected by the office every morning and added to the daily attendee data. Once the absence is recorded by the office, all the teacher will see is “excused absence”.
Cafeteria service is not available during the first week of school; however, there will be lunch time food sales by various school clubs and teams.
A few exciting opportunities for parents to connect with the school are offered during the first few weeks of school.

Every year there are changes in a school community. Staff progress, retire and positive transitions occur. I am a part of these changes. Changes in June 2018 moved Mr. Rowell to Westview Secondary. I am very excited to follow him and build on the positive future of Garibaldi. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the school.
