Important information for Garibaldi Rebels and their parents / guardians:
I hope you are enjoying your summer and are looking forward to start up! I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some information about school start up for grade 9 – 12 students.
One of our main communication platforms is the school website, which we take pride in updating frequently. Please find it at gss.sd42.ca and make this your first point of contact with the school. The GAZETTE is on the main page, is updated daily and where you will find all the latest school news and information. Also on our website, you will find links for our Facebook, Twitter & Instagram pages. All teacher email addresses and additional school contact information is posted.
Additionally, information is sent directly to families via the Parent Portal such as newsletters, emergency information, opportunities, etc. This program is how parents give consent for their student: to attend field trips, extra-curricular activities, WiFi use, consent to print student photo in yearbook, as well as absence reporting, to pay fees, etc. Every student must be linked individually to a parent email account. If parents still need to link a student, they may contact Mrs. Hyslop at firstname.lastname@example.org and request a “Linking Key”, ensuring they include their student’s name.
The following school fees apply and can now be paid on the SD 42 Parent Portal:
Student fee $28.00 (MANDATORY)
There is a FREE GSS Planner APP available for download at either the App Store or Google play. Search Garibaldi Secondary
Yearbook $55.00 (OPTIONAL)
Lock purchase $6.00 each (OPTIONAL – 2 recommended – one for gym locker)
Required supplies for each course will be outlined by subject teachers. All students require binders, paper, pens, pencils and gym strip for the first week of school.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th:
The first day of school, Tuesday September 4th, will be a short day. The schedule for grade 9 – 12 students that day will be from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm. Students will report to their Block A Class (class lists will be posted at the main entrance), where they will receive their course schedule & lockers (more info below). Please note, as there is no school bus service available for this 12:30 start, students are welcome to use the school bus that will arrive at 8:30 am if they choose.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
All students will meet with all their teachers, blocks A to H. Teachers will inform students during the first week of school of supplies that are required for their course.
Lockers will be distributed on Tuesday, September 4th. Students will NOT receive a locker until their 2018 – 2019 Student Fees are paid, and all previous invoices are resolved.
GSS will continue with our collaboration blocks again this year. On collaboration blocks, our students are welcome to be in the school working on projects, assignments, etc. On days with an am collaboration block, formal classes will not start until 9:40 am and on dates with pm collaboration time, formal classes will conclude at 1:30 pm, though students may remain in areas of study until 2:40 pm.
REPORTING A STUDENT ABSENCE:
Parents may report absences via the parent portal, which will notify teachers directly. This is preferred to a traditional phone call.
Portal reports are collected by the office every morning and added to the daily attendee data. Once the absence is recorded by the office, all the teacher will see is “excused absence”.
Cafeteria service is not available during the first week of school; however, there will be lunch time food sales by various school clubs and teams.
A few exciting opportunities for parents to connect with the school are offered during the first few weeks of school.

Every year there are changes in a school community. Staff progress, retire and positive transitions occur. I am a part of these changes. Changes in June 2018 moved Mr. Rowell to Westview Secondary. I am very excited to follow him and build on the positive future of Garibaldi. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the school.
